Join us for 9AM Mass, Monday, January 1: Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. (no 6:30am or 8am services)
On New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, by conducting a feast. The feast concludes the octave (eight-day) celebration of Christmas Day. On this day, the Church focuses on honoring Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and her role in humanity’s salvation. Honoring Mary as the Mother of God dates back to the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D.
However, whenever January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated and is not considered a Holy Day of Obligation.
Blessings to you and your family this new year!
